Summary/Abstract: In many countries, the ISI impact factor is considered nowadays a criterion for both assessing the quality of publications and that of researchers and professors. This article's intention is to present the evolution of the ISI impact factor from the beginning to the present day. Starting with the impact factor invention, the paper follows the effect it produced on the international community of researchers. Conceived to attract the best journals, the selection criteria proved to be the very reason of impact factor contesting. As a conclusion there are mentioned several methods for the proper use of the impact factor.
