Summary/Abstract: St. Augustine condemned the worship of many gods, but at the same time he praises the saints who have attained eternal life. He saw evil spirits in the pagan gods. Bishop of Hippo worshiped the holy martyrs, and celebrated the anniversary of their death. He presented also many times the gap between worship of idols, and worship of the saints. Religious reverence for ancestors in faith is evident in the Bible. In the Book of Sirach seven chapters are devoted to the memory of the great God's elects, through whom God gives his people strength and grace. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews enumerated the great saints of the Old Testament. Intercession of the saints in heaven and the neighbors on the earth does not violate the strict monotheism. It is an important form of showing each other love.
