Summary/Abstract: The education reform begun in Poland since 1973 can not be sufficiently characterized by individual measures such as the general introduction of the ten-year middle school and the reorientation of voca-tional training to broadly-profiled professions. The intention of the reform is the conversion of the entire education system in the sense of the concept of permanent education. The discussion about necessity and forms of permanent education has been conducted in Western Europe since the 1960s (see Lifelong Learning, A Symposium on Continuing Education, ed FW Jessup, Oxford 1970, J. de Veugle: Initiation à l'éducation permanente, Paris 1970). In Poland, the concept was adopted in the context of educational reform in the 1970s (Szkoła i edukacja permanentna, Warsaw 1975, R. Wroczyński: Edu-kacja permanentna, Warsaw 1976).
