Summary/Abstract: This work aims at analyzing the readiness on behalf of the European Union to enlarge to the Western Balkans despite decreasing desire expressed by the EU citizens to support further enlargement and the internal crisis the EU is facing in recent years. The analysis has been based on rationalist–constructivist theory, two theoretical frameworks under international relations, used to explain the reasons behind the EU enlargement. Whereas the rationalism assumes that enlargement takes place due to economic and geopolitical reasons, the constructivism assumes that enlargement takes place due to shared ideas and values. The author argues that the rationalism can better explain the readiness of the Union to enlarge to the Western Balkans. More specifically, the main reason for the membership is the stability of the region.
