Summary/Abstract: Out of a large corpus of material (oral, literary–historical, analytical and documentary) the paper brings together, systematizes and analyzes diverse authentic contents (from the offhand notes to developed stories) concerning the childhood of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić. Vuk’s fictionalized biographies are beyond the scope of our interest. By childhood we consider the time Vuk Karadžić spent in the village of Tršić up to the beginning of the First Serbian Uprising (1804) and his moving to Sremski Karlovci for schooling. The material organized on the chronological–thematic principle constitutes a more complete biographical mosaic of Vuk’s childhood and thus supplements, re–examines and relativizes the current knowledge on the roles and representations of a child in the traditional culture in general. Underneath the surface of stories about Vuk’s everyday life lies an archaic, mythological, ritual and religious semantics.
