Summary/Abstract: The paper explores some of the key tenets of teacher education as put forth by Dewey, traces their impact on the current approaches to teacher development and surveys the benefits of non-prescriptive models in generating lasting changes in teacher behaviour. The paper finally touches upon some of the practical consequences of the teacher-as-reflectivepractitioner paradigm, highlighting the equal validity attached to the individual teachers' diverse experiential knowledge and the multiple manifestations of the teaching and learning process.
