Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the evolution of video editing techniques and technologies.Video editing is a process that includes video and audio selection, placement and processing.Film editing can be regarded as the audio-video equivalent of word processing. According tothe processing methodologies and technologies, there is linear and non-linear editing. Thisarticle focuses mainly on non-linear video processing systems because they have evolved andcontinue developing even today. The emergence of non-linear editing systems, running on PCs,and their adaptation for video production was a gradual process. The products presented are innovative in terms of their philosophy and implementation. Differences in the philosophies of companies and their relevant implementations are in the way they approach the hardware while designing non-linear systems. In the one case the companies offer fully completed systems –proprietary hardware and software, while in the other case the emphasis is on software products and the client alone chooses the hardware depending on his financial capabilities and the purposes for which the equipment will be used.
