Summary/Abstract: This article is an extract from the first part of the thesis „Transformations in the value system of the Bulgarians in the transition period. Heroes and antiheroes„. In the beginning of the study the term „value system„ is defined. The subject of the study is the patriarchal peasantry,craftsmen and petty owners in the period up to and shortly after the liberation from Ottoman rule.Special attention is paid to the values professed by the leaders of the national liberation struggles against the Ottoman rule. The section that follows after outlines the key socio-anthropological types since 1878 to 9th September 1944. These are the politician, the intelligent, the clerk-hanger on,the peasant and the followers of Petar Dunov. „The main heroes„ during Communism in Bulgaria such as the ones in power and the repressed, workers and employees, artists and dissidents are described along with their values in the last part of the article.
