Summary/Abstract: The novel, published five years after the 9/11 events in New York City, deals with the issue of home-bred terrorism by trying to probe into the mind of a young, exalted Muslim devotee turned terrorist. The article will try to prove that larger issues are at stake and that Updike offers an indirect critique of the state of affairs in contemporary America that, ironically, can justify radicalism of thought and action.
