Summary/Abstract: Translation plays a principal role in maintaining communication, increasing the dialogue and recognizing the differences between cultures. Translation of cultural elements which are inseparable parts of texts mediates between different worlds of culture by helping them interact with each other. The purpose of this study is to determine translation strategies used in the translation by analyzing Leon Sciaky’s novel called Farewell to Salonica and the target text comparatively via methods for the translation of cultural elements. The novel chosen as corpus was translated into Turkish by translators Ünsal Eriş and Osman Çetin Deniztekin by the name of Elveda Selanik. It presents a rich world where different cultures intertwine and is embellished with cultural elements. It also witnesses history while depicting an autobiography and telling about distresses of being forced to migration. Within the theoretical framework of the study, translation scholar Newmark’s classification of cultural elements and translation strategies as domestication and foreignization put forward by translation studies researcher Venuti will be benefited from. Domestication strategy tends not to identify any difference between cultures and is for readability and acceptability in the target culture. This strategy can compromise omitting, changing, adding and adopting cultural elements during translation process. On the other hand being a strategy that tends to protect foreign elements in translation, carry cultural distance and difference to the target culture and help the target readers feel them, foreignization strategy can be applied through the use of various translation practices such as word for word translation, translating with footnotes and explanations. In the present study, which of these strategies is used mostly will be examined by providing examples from the text and the significance of these strategies in translation will be discussed.
