Summary/Abstract: Question we are facing in this paper is this: can democratization and democratic changes lead to violence? First of all, it is necessary to emphasize the conditions in which democratization and democratic changes can lead to violence. Then we will realise that democratization can indeed lead to violence in multiethnic societies which are divided in terms of ethnicity, history, culture and politics. On example of Bosnia and Herzegovina we can see how one multiethnic society, deeply divided, which existed in supranational entity of Yugoslavia, tucked in communist ideology, experienced failure and violence after democratization. After the fall of Berlin Wall and breakdown of communism in Eastern Europe comes the breakdown of Yugoslavian communist party and therefore the beginning of democratic transition. Democratization in Bosnia and Herzegovina enabled the victory of national parties which achieved consensus in taking down the communists in power, but failed to do so in other social and political issues.
