Summary/Abstract: What Vemus and Scalebook aim to achieve is consistency between instrumental practice in class and home study on material already practiced in class. This approach is typical of the distance learning environment through software dedicated to home study which diversifies the educational resources available to the student. The music technology company Playnote developed an application for iPad and iPhone, intended for the assessment of violin, clarinet, saxophone, flute and trumpet students, using artificial intelligence. Future versions will be created to support other instruments as well, based on the requirements of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music for grades 1-5. Scalebook is the first application that evaluates the users, giving them a descriptive feedback and results based on what they played on the instrument. Observations include comments on rhythm, pitch, intonation and speed of performance. Using music as the main vehicle and engaging groups in different countries and diverse contexts, Vemus seeks to reach people from different backgrounds and cultures, creating cultural links and ensuring a larger sharing of knowledge and research results and a larger impact. It is the result of a project that aimed to store a great number of musical examples for clarinet and flute. Vemus was built on the knowledge and results of the successful Imutus project that delivered an efficient practicing environment for the blockflöte.
