Summary/Abstract: In order to build trust in the online environment, as a key to economic and social development, the European legislator enacted Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 23 July 2014, on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market and repealing Directive 1999/93/EC (the eIDAS Regulation, in application since July 2016). According to par. 2 of the Preamble, the Regulation seeks to enhance trust in electronic transactions in the internal market by providing a common foundation for secure electronic interaction between citizens, businesses and public authorities, thereby increasing the effectiveness of public and private online services, electronic business and electronic commerce in the Union. Other international initiatives aiming to offer a legal perspective on electronic identification, electronic identity services and trust services had commenced before the eIDAS Regulation and are continuing after its enactment. Probably the most important of these initiatives is that of UNCITRAL’s Work Group IV – e-commerce, whose future work will be centered around eID and trust services. The purpose of this paper is to offer a general overview of the eIDAS Regulation and of the progress made by UNCITRAL, with their possible implications to the Romanian business and legal framework, without going into the technical details concerning electronic identification or trust services.
