Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes derivatives occurring in various speech acts (online) in the media, and overviews different approaches the speaker may adopt when using the range of possibilities offered by the Polish language. From the perspective of word formation, the approaches seem to form a scale: they range from a nearly mechanical and automatic creation of new lexical units falling within currently expansive derivational models, through coining words analogical to a given expression, up to more sophisticated derivational activities (e.g. in word-plays, while fervently discussing some issues on the Internet discussion forums, in memes) that reveal the communicative force of the word-formative potential. Some of the innovative derivational structures may be perceived as a result of a tendency to automate particular derivational techniques. Others may reflect a broadly understood linguistic creativity manifested by a wide variety of asystemic derivatives that are semantically irregular and result from the speaker deliberately breaking the rules of word formation.
