Summary/Abstract: Paper presents the results of research of physical and chemical soil properties of allotment gardens in Łódź. 15 soil samples taken out from humus layers were analyzed. In the selection of most allotment gardens the vicinity of major transport routes and industrial plants were accounted. Characteristics of the soil substrate was made taking into account the geological factors influencing the genetic and qualitative value of soil especially on agricultural production. Authors drew attention to the variability of soil properties and compared the obtained results to other Polish cities. It was found that the tested soils show high sorption capacities and small, in comparison with other cities, degree of heavy metal (cadmium, chromium and copper) pollution. They also highlighted the significant production potential of soils of allotment gardens.
