Summary/Abstract: This article is a synthesis of the USA’s role in the contemporary security environment. It is also an analysis of American extend policy in the context of the increased threats to global security. Practically, the analysis will concentrate on the power mechanisms that Washington has at its disposal in order to meet its objectives in a context in which making predictions about the future of the 21st century cannot be performed on real bases. The USA is so overwhelming in terms of economy, technology and culture, that it will continue to thrive through the 21st century even if it may be hit by wars and crises.
