Summary/Abstract: Several Gumelniţa settlements in southern Moldavia and northeastern Muntenia delivered rhombic clay slabs. These pieces present a good quality paste, their surfaces are polished or covered by engobe and decorated with geometric patterns (circles, arcs of circles, rhombs, zigzag lines) and sometimes with cuneiform motifs. The decorative motifs are not uniform but all have in common a unitary symbolism. The decoration of the plates takes place in the course of a central hole or central motif and consists of a combination of the several symbols of which we distinguish solar ones (circles, wedge-shaped patterns). On the anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures they have incised rhombic symbols or perhaps the image of the rhombic pendants, but this fact must be understood as an association between the figurine and the meaning of the rhombus as a symbol. We agree with the existence of rhombus-shaped amulet pendants, but in our opinion the rhombic plates have only played the role of amulets (or pendants).
