About Time of Appearance of the Loops on the Gold Roman Coins in Barbaricum

Summary/Abstract: There has been increasingly more information lately regarding Roman gold coins used as pendants, with a loop or perforation, found in Eastern and Central Europe. Among them, a very interesting group consists of coins with both elements (pierced and looped). Among 19 such coins, 13 copies dated to the last third of the 3rd century AD: aurei of Maximian Hercules, Probus, Carus, Tacitus and Diocletian. All of them have a perforation over the head of the emperor and doubly fluted loops of the same type (medallions loops type III 1b according to A. Bursche). Similar loops that were widely spread on many types of gold pendants in Barbaricum at that time. Apparently, looped and pierced gold Roman coins record the time of transition from one tradition of wearing coin-pendants (only with perforation) — to another (with loops): the last third of the 3rd century AD.
