Summary/Abstract: Moats were important elements of the defenses of towns. A less studied secondary usage of urban moats is there role in local economies. The study discusses the exploitation of moats in milling using the example of the town of Prešov. The paper argues that the study of the water mills built by the moat can add to our understanding of the general topographic development of the town.
