INFORMAL AND FORMAL SOCIAL CONTROL OVER THE MENTALLY ILL

Summary/Abstract: Forms of indirect social control over the mentally ill are first presented, through the views on normal and pathological, as well as prevention and treatment of psychic disorders. Subsequently, the author analyzes control over the mentally ill through legislation, as well as the issue of incompetence from the legal, psychiatric and ethical perspective. Legal provisions regulating involuntary hospitalization are specifically analyzed. The conclusion points to a series of unsolved social, professional, normative and political dilemmas related to social control and legal provisions regarding the social control over the mentally ill.
