Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the relation between industrial revolution and the modern conception of science, and its consequences. He tries to explain the essence of „science-fiction” literature which stems form the proper (modern and contemporary) understanding of science. He analyzes selected works of a Polish outstanding “s-f” writer, Stanisław Lem, whose thought can be located in the „post-Bacon” paradigm of science. Lem renounces philosophy as a Greek „divine knowledge” and favors sciences which lean on reliable, mathematical grounds. These sciences are to be a remedy for problems caused by the scientific and technological character of our civilization. The author also analyzes Lem’s project of future science, its main premises, possible realization, and characteristic methods.
