Antonio Rosmini and the Great French Encyclopedia (1751-1772)

Summary/Abstract: The author presents the opposition of Antonio Rosmini against the ideological and philosophical message of the French „Great Encyclopedia.” The impressive range of Rosmini’s interests gave him a great, almost encyclopedic, knowledge which he wanted to use for writing a Christian encyclopedia as a defense of religion, Christian culture and philosophy. The author also discusses consequences of the French „Encyclopedia,” especially its appreciation of empirical studies which enforced the positivist approach to the development of knowledge.
