Summary/Abstract: The article deals with a research topic unexplored in the Bulgarian ethnological discourse – the distribution and specifics of Buddhism in Bulgaria. It aims at providing information about the penetration of Buddhism in the country and the state of Buddhist communities at present. Suggesting that Buddhism should be studied within the paradigm of the new spirituality/new religiousness, it attempts to view this specific worldview in the context of its global dissemination in the Western world. Due to the necessity of providing basic information on the topic, the article does not claim to give particular answers, but to raise questions regarding the functions and significance of Buddha’s teaching in the Bulgarian national culture.
