Economic development of selected European Union countries in the assessment of index of economic freedom

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to answer the question whether EU membership promotes the increase of economic freedom and whether it affects the convergence of the countries surveyed. The countries taken as the subject of research are those which have joined the EU since 2004. The analysis employs statistical and econometric methods, and the summary index of economic freedom. Five areas od economic freedom have been assessed for 13 selected countries. The analysis showed convergence in all areas of economic freedom – it was especially strong in two asspects: Sound Money and Freedom of International Trade. The researched countries were highly evaluated, more than average, and the diversivity from the character of the coutries’ economies resulted mainly from the specificity of given countries economies. Almost all countries have achived economic freedom in the area Sound Money. The areas: Size of Government and Legal System and Property Rights, require the largest improvement.
