Summary/Abstract: One of the purposes of the Bologna process is to ensure high quality education in higher education institutions. This implies the need to build internal and external quality assurance systems based on specific standards. The article presents European standards for internal quality assurance in higher education. The results of empirical research were also discussed. The research was conducted in 100 faculties of Polish higher education institutions. The aim of the research was to answer the question: whether and to what degree internal quality assurance systems are used in the management process in Polish universities? The results of the research indicate that activities within internal quality assurance systems are used in the process of planning and decision making about resources, customers, suppliers, organization of courses and programs, controlling activities and achieving goals (to average degree) and planning and decision making regarding courses of studies, motivating employees (to high degree).
