Summary/Abstract: Basing on the abundant factual evidence and sociological data, the article analyses the urgent problems of the development of demographic potential in Russia, of the country’s population health and of increasing welfare. However, the author emphasizes that irrespective of the chosen model of economic development and external-economic conjuncture in the situation of demographic crisis Russia can hope to a social-economic stabilization at best. It is also noted that one cannot speak about any leadership in global politics and economy without working out and realization of the state’s strategic programme of overcoming the demographic crisis.
