Summary/Abstract: Of all the works by Mickiewicz, it is Pan Tadeusz to have the richest history. Its editions, abundant and complex reception, as well as research or scholarly interpretation forming part of this reception, all have contributed to a long life and an almost incessant presence of the work in the national and cultural awareness of the society, whilst also making it an important source of creative inspiration. The issue of what sort of Pan Tadeusz the consecutive generations of its readers and, to an extent, users of, and contributors to, culture have dealt with, appears to be of primary importance not only for the studies of nineteenth-century literary culture but also for a whole lot of historical-literary themes.
