Summary/Abstract: An analysis is offered of three models of the asylum space: modernistic, with its pronouncedly outlined hierarchy (Stanisław Lem); a transitory model, whose borders are fluid (John Katzenbach); and, postmodernistic – the most unrestrained and liberal model (Karin Fossum). The selected works, juxtaposed, make evident a certain dependence related to the space of a mental hospital as an enclave of criminality. The tighter the patient closure and isolation, the greater the criminality among the doctors and other staff, who feel omnipotent and exempt from punishment. The thing is, the more open an asylum is, the more menacing its patients become.
