Summary/Abstract: In the transforming world economic situation, the role of higher education, focusing on knowledge and knowledge creation, has become appreciated; while the study of the economic roles of universities has become a part of the study of economics, pedagogy and regional science. In our paper, after reviewing the related literature we make an attempt to reveal the regional characteristics of Hungarian higher education, endeavour to categorise Hungarian higher educational institutions on the basis of regional economic effects, while finding traces of the regional factor in the local characteristics of R&D activities in Hungary.
