Summary/Abstract: This study concerns the current state of research and relations between research and technology; it also looks at the imprecise nature of borders between basic and applied forms along with problems of financing. In the future, the significance of industrial involvement will be strengthened regarding increases in research work. In a follow-up time period, new human roles will be able to develop as the focus of very different research areas and, via this, a greater cohesion of science and the humanities may be envisaged, thereby strengthening the expected weight of activities and investments made.
