Summary/Abstract: Two hundred years after his death Ivan Gundulić (1589-1638) was one of the most popular old Croat writers who exerted a great deal of influence (especially with his epic Osman, 1844), contributing to political homogenization, cultural institutionalization, linguistic standardization, and the continuity of Croatian literature in the times of the Illyrian Movement. August Šenoa (1838-1881), the greatest Croatian writer of the nineteenth century, based his work on the achievements of the Illyrian Movement and so did one of the greatest Slavonic scholars of all times, Vatroslav Jagić (1838-1923). While the former founded, under the strong influence of Gundulić, modern Croatian literature, the latter established its modern scholarship, especially historiography, and took an active part in the setting up of cultural and scientific institutions that made Croatia part and parcel of the modern European cultural community. Taking advantage of this occasion the author discusses the crucial relations between the above mentioned writers, as well as their role, significance, and importance in our literary tradition.
