Summary/Abstract: Human trafficking is one of the most common forms of organized crime. Given the developed network of traffickers and a huge number of victims, it has attained the characteristics of a transnational crime. Particularly affected are underdeveloped countries and countries in transition, such as those in South-eastern Europe, including the countries of former Yugoslavia. This region has an important geostrategic position due to the fact that it is situated at the intersection of important international criminal routes leading to developed Western European countries. In this article, the authors discuss the normative and institutional framework of the countries in this region, analyzing the individual legislative solutions, indicating their drawbacks and examining their compliance with international standards. The paper provides an overview and analysis of crimes involving human trafficking in the territory of some countries in this region, including an overview of recorded forms of exploitation and imposed criminal sanctions. Furthermore, the authors stress the importance of international criminal justice cooperation between the countries in this region, which is crucial for combating trafficking in human beings as well as for the overall stability in the region and Europe. In the conclusion, the authors provide suggestions de lege ferenda for the purpose of efficiently combating human trafficking.
