Summary/Abstract: The research sets three goals: to examine the trends of the legal deposit process within the EU, to illustrate them by concrete examples and to point out the problems of the Bulgarian practice in international context. The article focuses on the major trend of the legal deposit in the last twenty years: the legislative and practical enlargement of the legal deposit scope over all type of electronic publications. Two stages of legislation reforms are identified: first, related to the static electronic publications, and second, related to the dynamic online content. The technological and organizational aspects of the newly implemented digital deposit practices are illustrated by cases from almost all EU countries. The summarized data from more than twenty countries proves that the number of deposit book copies in Bulgaria is one of the highest within the EU. However the real problem of the local legal deposit is not quantitative. The major challenge is the lack of technological tools for archiving the large variety of electronic publications. The comparative analysis leads to two major conclusions regarding the local legal deposit: it is far behind the majority of the EU countries in terms of collection and preservation of electronic publications; its modernization would require higher involvement of the state institutions and better cooperation between libraries and publishers.
