Summary/Abstract: The Unconsoled is not your typical Ishiguro novel. It is not that the Nobel prize winning author disappoints, it is just that he leaves the much explored territory of post-imperial nostalgia to deal with another type of identity struggle. Through his main character Ryder, Ishiguro projects complex metaphors of displacement, memory and loss of identity only to amaze and at the same time confuse the reader whose limits are invariably tested throughout the novel.
