Summary/Abstract: The study uses a set of documents identified within the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire in Moscow and offers a new perspective about the international position of the Romanian state in 1877-1878. When the Independence proclaimed by the Romanian Parliament was not recognized, the Romanian political elites and Prince Carol decided to use the involvement in the Russian-Turkish war as a booster of the chances leading to the European recognition of the Independence. The study mentions the attitude of Russia, which did not wish - in the early stages of the events – to offer Romania any compensations for the loss of the lower part of Bassarabia. In the end, Romania managed to maintain its independence, even if it was necessary to accept some conditions asked by the Great Powers. The loss of Southern Bassarabia in favor of Russia opened a wound in the minds of the public opinion and explained, up to a certain point, why Romania tried to glide, for several decades, in the sphere of influence of the Central Powers.
