Summary/Abstract: The study explores, with many details, both the history of the special relations of USA and Latin American states and the strategic significance of Latin America for the perennial national interests of the US. The author clearly and almost directly states that the role of USA within NATO strongly resembles that of Washington traditionally had in both Americas – that of hegemonic power. He estimates that, even if now the US prestige and influence are weaker than before in Latin America, hegemonic status might be regained and US national security might be significantly boosted by integrating some of the Latin American countries in an enlarged and consolidated NATO.
