Summary/Abstract: The peacekeeping missions of the United Nations have become their most visible concept. From the moment they were first established until now, they have gone through significant changes. Compared to a traditional mission from the Cold War era, current missions are no longer involved only in inter-state conflicts, they have began to understand the concept of self-defence in a much wider context, but they also got an important civilian dimension. Still, in spite all the changes, they are nowadays more than ever at the crossroads, i.e. the purpose of their existence is now questioned more then ever
