Summary/Abstract: In this text, the author discusses the application of the social choice theory in the domain of the critique of the possibility of collective decision-making. The results of this critique are confronted with the arguments in favour of the democratic decision-making process, put forward by the supporters of the theory of deliberative democracy. The problem of collective decision-making is transferred to the domain of the business community, in order to investigate the possibility of creating and endorsing ethical codes at the level of the business organization, professional associations, industry, and the sphere of business in general. The analysis shows that the social choice theory criticism losses some of its plausibility when applied to the creation of the regulations and ethical codes in business. With the acceptance of some results from the theories of deliberative democracy, the claim becomes more plausible that successful ethical self-regulation is possible in certain parts of the business sphere.
