Summary/Abstract: “The Messenger of Saint Francis” – a devotional periodical in the Transylvanian archdiocese during dualism. Th e press of the Transylvanian Archdiocese (today: the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia) dates back to the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, having “Egyházi és Iskolai Hetilap” (“Church and School Weekly paper”), which started in June 1867, edited by Éltes Károly, grammar school teacher (1867–1872). Th is was followed by „Erdélyi Egyházmegyei Értesítő” („Gazette of the Transylvanian Archdiocese” – 1876–1877), and „Közművelődés” („General Education” – 1878–1918). In the 1870s a pedagogical specialist journal was launched, entitled „Néptanoda” (“Educating the Public” – 1870–1873), and a weekly paper with mixed content, which provided practical information to the population in the countryside (“Hargita” – 1872–1873). Th e “Kalazantinum”, which was the monthly paper of the piarist teachers to be in Cluj, appeared in 1895 and published articles from diff erent areas of science and life (it stopped in 1915). Aft er the turn of the century, the devotional associations also started to appear in the press: the Franciscan Th ird Order started a bulletin called “Th e Messenger of Saint Francis” (1903–1921), and the Eucharistic association started the “Periodical of the Eucharistic Association” (1903–1914). Th is paper summarizes the result of the research which aims the workout of the devotional periodical in the Transylvanian diocese: “Th e Messenger of Saint Francis”. Th e research is based on the following two questions: what motivates the Transylvanian church intellectuals to publish devotional periodicals, or if this tendency is only regional or it is characteristic to the church in the whole world. Th e second question concentrates on the presented topics: in this study their approach to the Catholic press products and to the literature, respectively, the problems of the society are presented.
