Methodological Discourse in Contemporary Economics:An Attempt at Deconstructing the Modernistic Approach

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to answer the question about the cognitive condition of contemporary mainstream economics and about prospects for heterodox conceptions. The research project is approached from a cultural-constructivist cognitive perspective, which involves accepting assumptions of social theory adopted in cultural studies and – with reference to methodological issue – the epistemology of social constructivism. The author posits that explanatory and predictive limitations of orthodox economics result from applying a modernist approach to reality, which, in the light of current postmodernist convictions, seems anachronistic. Concluding, the author suggests that conceptions representing the cultural approach will gradually grow in significance in economics.
