Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it investigates problems of definition around critical theory, by looking at a definition closely linked to the programme of the Frankfurt school on the one hand, and a broader one, based on the refusal of value-neutrality on the other. I will argue that—for different reasons—neither of the definitional attempts are satisfactory, however, a third one, based on the significance of critical theory in terms of era-diagnosis, appears to be more productive. In the second major part of the paper I attempt to reconstruct Marxist social theory applying this latter definition. This reconstruction can be regarded as successful, if it succeeds in clearly delimiting those Marxist theoretical statements, which have later proven to be determining for critical theory, either as fundamental starting points or as objects of criticism.
