Summary/Abstract: The paper comments on Michael Burawoy’s program of public sociology and the debate in its wake now with a new stream of discussion in Hungary launched by the journal Replika. Focusing on the plausibility of Burawoy’s fourfold typology it acknowledges the heuristic value implied and appreciates its capacity concerning a pluralistic cooperation of various branches and styles of the sociological enterprise. It also expresses, in turn, some doubts concerning the dimensions and the specific fields of the typology, with special regard to the interpretation of professionalism, basic and applied research in sociology. While greeting its objective of cultivating a closer relationship with civil society and fostering genres of a problem-oriented approach, it also calls attention to maintaining the specific codes of discipline (with cognitive-style approaches in its centre) and the delicate balance of public involvement and the relative autonomy of the field. The paper finishes with a brief assessment of domestic perspectives in these regards.
