Summary/Abstract: In this paper, our intention was to provide a general presentation of professional supervision as a new domain of social assistance in Romania. Starting from definitions, principles, functions, the role of supervision as well as its aim in countries with a tradition in this field, we tried to point out the following aspects: professional supervision in the field of social assistance is necessary in Romania as long as it may influence the quality of the social assistance services, and which are its advantages and disadvantages? According to the materials that we studied, we consider that supervision is for the social worker a huge opportunity for benefiting from continuous professional training, which brings benefits both to the organization to which he/she belongs by the increase of the efficiency of the provided services, and to the consumer of such services too. Supervision can undoubtedly influence the quality of the social assistance services, as the two main actors of such process, by the relation between the supervisor – the supervisee, bring together interpersonal features, knowledge, skills and cultural values. All these are used for achieving the objectives aimed at during the supervision process with the final purpose of solving the costumers’ needs. Supervision may play the role of an acceleration factor in the development of social assistance services, at the level and the quality provide in the countries that accumulated a certain tradition in this field.
