Balance Sheet Presentation of Net Assets and Provisions for Life Assurance Policies Where the Investment Risk Is Borne by the Policyholders

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – Retrospective analysis of balance sheet presentation of net assets and provisions for life assurance policies where the investment risk is borne by the policyholders in the years 2001–2015. The balance sheet items of these name concern mainly life insurance with insurance capital fund as well as other investment insurance products, which popularity significantly increased in recent years. Design/methodology/approach – Studies were carried out for the years 2001–2015 using the aggregated accounts of insurance companies prepared by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority. Discussion on the selected parameters of assets and liabilities of insurers was based mainly on methods: observation and analysis and logical design. Findings – Studies have shown steady growth in the share of life insurance in the assets of the whole insurance sector, which was the result of higher asset growth in relation to Section II. In Section I identified dominant role of assets for life assurance policies where the investment risk is borne by the policyholders. Balance sheet parameters associated with this group of products were the subject of detailed studies described in the following sections of the paper. Originality/value – This article is part of a wider project which is prepared by authors in the field of investment insurance products (especially: life insurance with insurance capital fund), covering the area of science and practice of this subject.
