Summary/Abstract: Gambling is an addiction which affects more and more people of different ages, educational level and occupation. It has a rich history which dates back thousands of years B.C. Gambling was present in all ancient civilisations. Several famous people, such as Descartes, Casanova, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński and Ludwik Solski, were gamblers. The first gambling house was opened in Poland in 1988, and in 2007 Poles spent 8 billion zloty on gambling. Today we witness the spread of so called e-gambling, to an extent that is becoming pathological. Addiction to gambling has various destructive consequences in personal, family, social and moral life. There are helpful programmes of treatment for pathological gambling for those who suffer from it. There are also Anonymous Gamblers Groups, and relatives of addicted people can also get help in Gam-Anon groups.
