Summary/Abstract: This study deals with the creation of the CSAS Mining Research Institute, which was formed by the reorganization of the ministerial research institutes at that time. It focuses on three basic factors in the creation of the Institute: the orientation of its antecedent (the ministerial institute), the key figures and the specialist discussions involved. A close examination is made here of the individual measures taken throughout the 1950s leading progressively to the creation of an academic institute. Special attention is paid to the tension between applied and basic research, which was an important subject during the period under review and indirectly led to the acceleration of the institute’s creation.
