Summary/Abstract: The article presents the selected dimensions of the discourse with respect to the notion category ”pogranicze” (”borderland”), which has been ongoing in the Polish sociology since the thirties of the last century. The consideration opens with Józef Chałasiński’s understanding of the term ”pogranicze”, with the impact laid upon the ”antagonism” as the basic intergroup relationship at the contemporary Polish-German borderland. Subsequently, basing on selected examples, the author presents the discourse over the borderland in Polish sociology during the transformation period after 1989. The observations derived from the sociological discourse depict the changes of this notion category in its understanding and explication, heading not towards the negation of the legitimacy of the use of this notion but towards the shift from the marginal category into the central positions. The author observes that these days a comprehensively understood idea of the borderland may facilitate the research of any social borders, not merely the ones resulting from the ethnic dimension of the social diversity
