Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to display the changing diplomatic structure of the Middle East in the 1970s and 1980s. The central event which shows a change of the political methods is the 3-day visit paid by the Egyptian president Anwar Sadat’s to Israel. Apart from the detailed description of this unique meeting, the study focuses on the circumstances and consequences of this visit. To understand the meaning of that visit, the prior opportunities of a political solution of the Arab- Israeli conflict must be acknowledged. The essay explores both the advantages and the disadvantages of bilateral and multilateral peace talks. The visit had serious impact on the Middle East region and Egypt itself. The study shows how the priorities of the actors involved in the conflict developed as a consequence of this meeting, and analyses Egypt’s changing position in the region.
