Summary/Abstract: The United Arab Republic and its leader, president Nasser faced several serious problems in the foreign and internal politics in the beginning of the 1960s. The Yemeni revolution in September 1962 would have been a perfect opportunity for the Egyptian leader to re-establish his former authority, but the events didn’t meet his requirements. The Yemeni Arab Republic remained weak despite the growing Egyptian intervention, while the position of Cairo’s foreign policy had gone from bad to worse. From the beginning the socialist countries supported the republican system. However, their indirect support was very moderate, due to the Egyptian hegemony in the rule of Saana. But this situation changed radically in 1967, when the leadership of UAR could not continue its mission in Yemen due to the defeat suffered by Israel. After the Khartoum agreement the UAR gave up its position in return for the financial support from Saudi Arabia, which allowed the UAR to recover its damaged economy.
