Summary/Abstract: In the present paper I will review the diagnostic painted pottery of the LH III B2 and LH III C Early periods. Between these a short independent phase, the Transitional LH III B2 – LH III C Early can be established. It can be demonstrated from the analysis of the pottery from closed deposits connected with the destruction of the Mycenaean palaces that the palaces were destroyed in another relative chronological phase than earlier suggested. The detailed analysis of the pottery from the destruction horizons proves that these destructions took place not at the end of the LH III B2 period but during the Transitional LH III B2 – LH III C Early phase. After the determination of the absolute chronological place of the phase, a few basic conclusions will be drawn concerning the time and the circumstances of the destruction of the palaces.
